Modernizing Data and Analytics Infrastructure of Major Sporting Goods Retailer

Challenge

A $1B sporting goods retailer required performance and functionality in the cloud to match or exceed what they experienced on premise with Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) Appliances, and at a lowered annual cost.

Solution

• Current state and future state possibilities were fleshed out through a Workshop designed to explore the historical factors that influenced the legacy and their significance going forward. Gained insights helped determine the feasibility of various technologies.
• Performed POC to prove out the future state technologies identified during the Workshop. Clearly defined success criteria allowed the validation of Snowflake, Matillion, and Microstrategy Cloud.
• Migrated legacy data warehouse ecosystem onto the future state technology stack. Using an Agile framework based on sprints, a custom migration approach was developed that minimized risk and maximized returns.

Result

Infrastructure was built with Best Practices covering data modeling, ETL design patterns, and Snowflake Operational Excellence. This resulted in a more sustainable system based on consistency, standardization, and performance.
